I often hear people say 'My voice is like such-and-such.' Maybe low. Maybe husky. Maybe small. Maybe tight. They talk about what kind of sound quality it has as if that is something that is fixed. But the sound quality of your singing voice is not limited to your current description of it. That is your habitual use. It's the way you've got used to using it. In each moment the sound quality of your voice is the sum of a particular combination of vocal ingredients. And each of those ingredients is on a spectrum from one polarity to another. So when you discover what those ingredients are, and how to produce them, you can choose how you combine them, in an endless variety of ways to give you huge versatility in your singing and to create the vocal qualities you want. And it's deep fun to learn them! Some of the ingredients & their spectra will be well-known to you: Volume: On a spectrum from quiet through middling to loud. Range: On a spectrum from low through middle to high. And there are others which may not be so familiar: Pitch fluctuation: From wobbly through vibrato to very pure. Resonance or Timbre: From nasal, through bright, through thin and flute-like, through warm + rich to dark. (This is one of the most exciting ones to explore and one in which some of my clients have made really powerful breakthroughs that gave them a whole new vista to their voice) Breathiness: From breathy, through rich tone to pressed/glottal. And there are others to discover too, all of which combine to give unique sound flavours. They are your palette of vocal colours. The quality of breathiness is one of the most important ones to master, because if you habitually sing at one end of the spectrum or the other, you can damage your voice, and you will certainly tire it. If it's too breathy you will often run out of breath to sustain long notes and phrases. If it's too pressed you will damage your vocal cords. When you find the centre of this spectrum, rich tone, you get the richest, fullest tone to your voice, which is very rewarding and satisfying – and it really helps you take care of your voice. Developing control over this is one of the first things that I teach on my group singing course, 'The Confident Singer Masterclass', and on my 1-1 training, 'The Foundation For Superb Singing. ' In these valuable, enjoyable and exciting trainings, I'll teach you all of the vocal ingredients I've described plus a whole lot more besides, so you can develop your singing as an instrument with great power, richness and versatility....and express so much more of yourself. Find out more here (When I was younger my voice had a thinner sound to it, but since I've been working with my voice I've developed a warmer resonance that has helped me find a more empowered place within myself. And I sing this way out of choice, not limitation.) I'd love to help you overcome your vocal limitations and discover the full spectrum of your voice. So do get in touch if that appeals to you.
