How to relax a tight throat for better singing

By Selena, 07/09/2022, Category:Unlock your vocal potential, Taking care of your voice

It's a really common issue.

Many of my students struggle with a tight or tense throat. It can be uncomfortable, frustrating or even distressing. It can interfere with the quality of their voice.

There are many different possible causes, which I'm not going into right now.

But the good news is, there’s a very simple, effective and enjoyable action you can take to ease and relax a tight throat.

It makes you feel better. It's good for your voice and helps you sing more freely.

So what is it ?

Well, it's purely… A Sigh.

Hhhhhaaaaa.

Not just any old sigh though. It can't be forced, faked or pushed.

You have to find a genuine, authentic emotional source for this sigh.

You tune into yourself deeply and think of something that would truly make you feel a sense of relief. Then use that genuine feeling to trigger your sigh.

Do it a few times. Keep reaching for that authentic cause. Make them deep sighs.
Aim for them to be pure breath rather vocalised sound. A mix is ok but keeping it a breathy sigh keeps it simpler and more effective.

As you do it, hopefully you'll feel the inside of your throat actually relaxing and expanding.

It’s good for you physically. And it has a soothing effect on your soul as well. It can ‘clear out the cobwebs’ as it were.

So give it a try and see how you find it.

(Even if you've done this with me before, I recommend doing it again now, and daily, to dispel tensions that can creep into your throat without you realising it).

Then have a sing and express yourself freely!

I hope you find this helpful.
