When people come to me for singing lessons there are an array of things they ask for help with. Range, breathing, power, confidence, and pitching are among the most common ones.
But one of the keys to great singing, the core element that literally charms people’s ears, that fills their hearts with joy, that makes audiences find your singing utterly delectable – is something that vocal learners don’t ask for very often. Funny hey?
Sometimes singers kind of unknowingly point at it, when they say they want better tone, or more richness. So what is it?
In my voice-work I have developed a motto, ‘Everything in service of resonance’
That’s because RESONANCE is SO important.
Resonance is the tone quality of your voice. The ‘colour’. The timbre. And you have a wide array of possible qualities available to you, when you know how to access them.
Resonance literally means to re-sound. It’s the way in which, the note you make with your vocal folds gets amplified and enhanced by the acoustic chambers in your throat, mouth, nose and sinuses. You can gain total control of this, and produce a wonderful variety of timbres to express the moods and emotions in any song.
But most vocalists simply aren’t making the most of their resonators. Most singers don’t know how to tap into this incredible natural facility of the voice, your internal graphic equaliser.
It really is the under-appreciated key to great singing because when you can access your optimum resonance, you have the choice for every note to sound rich and ringing, to sound powerful and expressive, to give your voice strength and projection, to delight the ears of your audience.
So when I say ‘everything in service of resonance’, I mean this:
When I get people to release their tongue, or articulate their lips well, why? To unlock better resonance. When I get singers to release their jaw, or open their throat, why? To unlock better resonance. When I get people to direct their tone upwards, or smile when they sing, why? To unlock better resonance. When people learn to breathe better, why? Amongst several reasons, to unlock better resonance.
And it’s one of the most fun ingredients in your voice to play with, too!
Often, when I teach a student to access better resonance, they say ‘ Wow!’ I never knew I had that in me!
There are 3 core ways to access optimum resonance:
- Smile when you sing ( an eye-smile not just a grin)
- Widen your throat ( as if you were feeling amazed and delighted)
- Lower your larynx ( the feeling you get just at the very beginning of a yawn)
Give these a try! You can do them separately or all together.
(If you've already done a fair bit of vocal training, and you are familiar with this combo, you'll find there are still plenty more subtle tweaks you can use to powerfully heighten the effectiveness of these techniques).
Most likely you will need help and guidance to access them properly and consistently.
