You know that feeling when your voice just doesn’t fill the space?
Like… you’re singing and giving it your all, but it’s still not reaching the back of the room.
Or maybe it is - but only because you're pushing and ending up with a tired, sore throat?
Either way it can be really frustrating!
And it’s SO common. You’re not the only vocalist who struggles with this.
Some singers try to force their sound out - but end up straining.
Others hold back, and their voice stays small or weak.
Neither approach helps your voice carry out with power, strength and richness.
One of my students, Finn, had this exact issue.
He was the lead singer in an amateur rock band. He loved it... but after every gig, his voice felt knackered.
He was loud, but you could hear the excess effort in his voice – which didn’t sound nice, and it wasn’t sustainable.
When we worked together, we looked at the four ingredients that actually make projection work - without shouting, straining, or relying on a mic.
- Breath. We need to let our breath really be the power of our voice. Learning how to direct a strong, steady, controlled flow of air using the abdominal muscles. Without it, the throat overcompensates.
- Vocal folds. These need to come together cleanly. If they vibrate with too much pressure your voice sounds rough. With not enough connection, your sound will be too soft.
- Resonance. This is one of your best friends when it comes to projection.Opening the spaces in your mouth, throat and face gives your voice its ‘ring’ andincredible carrying power. It's your natural amplifier.
- Articulation.Clear vowels and consonants make a huge difference. When you form them well - with your lips, jaw and tongue - the sound naturally projects. It’s like your little trumpet! But when the lips and tongue are lazy, your voice lacks focus and trajectory.
They’re all connected. Improving one usually boosts the others.
When we sing with authentic emotion - with genuine feeling, that we’re not afraid to express - something in our voice wakes up.
When we truly communicate a song from our own heart to the hearts of everyone listening, it tends to activate all four ingredients naturally.
It joins them up into one flowing pathway.
I call that The Fountain.
And it feels great!
So many of my students, when they discover their fountain - they’re blown away by the free, vibrant sound they’ve unlocked.
