Well let's get straight to it. Confidence in singing really comes down to two things: 1) Whether you know or believe that your singing quality is good enough for the context in which you're singing it. (i.e trusting your skill level) 2) If you have that taken care of, whether you get performance anxiety. (And both of these can include whether you're giving yourself permission, deep down, to be heard). These 2 aspects take different kinds of action to resolve, and it's the first one that I'm addressing today .Most people who lack confidence in singing, do so because they know or believe that their voice and/ or way of singing isn't good enough for the context. And some people simply don't know. How about you? For instance, you might feel confident singing your part in a choir alongside 10 other people in your section, but you might not feel confident to sing that same part solo. If you want to increase your confidence in any context, I've got 3 steps you can take to get there. 1. Get some feedback! i.e. get some insight into your vocal strengths and weaknesses. 2. Learn what action you can take to maximise your strengths and transform those weaknesses into positives. 2b. Get lots of encouragement! 3. Take the actions discovered in (2), follow your own journey of change...unleash your vibrant voice.... then give yourself a big pat on the back and celebrate! To be yet more helpful I will now spell out each of these steps a little more. 1. Get some feedback: Ideally get together with a friend with a discerning ear and a supportive attitude... and sing for them. Ask them to share what they find to be 3 points of your vocal strengths, and 3 points which they can hear could be improved. Take notes. (Do this process as an exchange if you can find the right person). If you're super-shy, then I recommend doing this in front of a mirror instead. And yes, you can learn a lot this way...as long as you take a constructive viewpoint. Or alternatively, go to see an expert who can give you really knowledgeable, precise and constructive feedback. 2. Learn what action you can take to transform: If you did (1) with yourself or a friend, just see what insights you can get. Ideally take your new-found aims to a singing teacher who can show you how to make those changes effectively, healthily and powerfully! 2b. Ask your friends, family, mentors or teachers to specifically support your path of transformation by giving you regular encouragement and acknowledging your shifts with positivity. 3. Once you know what the actions are, practice them regularly until they become new habits in your singing and you can feel and hear the difference! Track your own journey with a journal and coloured stickers so you can feel the satisfaction of change every step of the way. ( I have always done this and find it incredibly useful). Get some more feedback at this stage. Result: The quality of your voice will surge! So you'll feel excited, happy and confident to sing in new spaces and places! More self-expression - more connection - more joy! I heartily encourage you to give the above 3 steps a try, and I'd be very happy to support you at any stage of it! Passion + Encouragement + Increasing Skill = A great voice and a confident singer! Here's to your surging confidence!
