I had a great insight a few weeks ago whilst working with a singing student. The issue in his singing that we were working on was that it sounded a bit chopped up, a bit stilted, a bit held back. In cases like this I usually ask the student to sing with more flow, so they imagine their song is like a river; that way the words and phrases connect up more and keep moving. This usually works very nicely and has a good impact. This time I got a new vision come through : to sing in waves! This still brings in the important energy of flow, but it also has more dynamism, and rhythm, to really ENGAGE with the listener. The pattern of a wave is the gathering....building....swelling .....rising......peaking......tumbling.....crashing......ebbing...... I suggest trying this out with each and every PHRASE of a song, AND with the overall song itself. And you can even bring it in to syllables, perhaps at first just with certain significant syllables in the song. I've discovered that this really increases the sense of excitement, satisfaction and engagement / connection /power in the effect of a song. It's good fun, try it out! Let me know how you get on!
