Earlier this year, I gathered with a group of women friends to go through the 12-week adventure, ‘The Artists Way.’
You've probably heard of it. It's a famous book by Julia Cameron, which is ‘a course in discovering and recovering your creative self.’
We realised we would get more out of it and keep to it better if we did it within a supportive group. We met once a fortnight to explore each new chapter and share our experiences from doing the previous one.
It was really wonderful!
We had fun, we shared our struggles and vulnerabilities, hopes and dreams, blocks and breakthroughs. We drank herbal teas and ate cake. We sat by the fire and laughed, and sometimes cried.
Each of us had our own focus depending on what our artistic path was. But also, some of the women did it with no idea which creative direction they were going in.
I of course, was focused on bringing out my creativity as a singer and songwriter.
The group journey was such a great thing to do. I highly recommend it.
And today I want to share with you, what was the most powerful thing I learned from the process.
To put it simply, it's this:
Whatever your block or issue, overcome it, or sidestep it, by taking action of some kind.
When we are in creative / dynamic action, we avoid being overwhelmed by negative, stultifying thoughts or emotions.
And I'm talking about small action steps, something relevant to your path, your dreams and yearnings.
So for me, that panned out as things like:
~ When you feel jealous of other artists - take action.
~ When you feel that no one cares about your art - take action.
~ When you feel blocked about writing - take some other action.
~ When you worry that you'll never get an another gig - take action.
~ When you're afraid you’ll never get round to recording that album - take action.
and many more scenarios.
The actions I’m speaking of will be small or medium steps. Specific steps from a list that you've brainstormed previously.
In my case, it could be one of these:
~ Contact venues
~ Improve my website
~ Share a social media post about something that inspires my songs
~ Listen to some of my favourite music
~ Play some scales or practice a chord sequence
~ Do a vocal warm-up
~ Go for a walk
~ Write about my sensory experiences in the moment
~ Talk to a friend
~ Look over some old half-finished creations and play with them
~ Have a jam
~ Brainstorm new song ideas.
So, these are relevant to my path as a singer-songwriter, obviously, but I hope this example and story gives you some inspiration.
Whatever YOUR path of creativity, artistry or self expression…. whenever you experience a block, struggle, self doubt, lack of confidence, worry, negative thought - Just take action.
Brainstorm your own list of relevant, inspiring, constructive actions and choose one of those.
Then you'll move out of stuckness and painful emotions, into the joy and satisfaction of doing. And who knows where that might lead?
You might become a prolific, famous artist!
Or you might just live a much more fulfilling life.
Go you!
